An exceptionally important masterpiece of fourteenth-century Sienese panel painting.

The work, formerly part of the collection of Raimond Van Marle and recently rediscovered on the art market, has been identified as the upper pinnacle of the celebrated Monticchiello Polyptych, now dismembered and divided among several European institutions.

The refined execution of the flesh tones, the precious gold ground, and the unmistakable stylistic details confirm the authorship of Pietro Lorenzetti.

Following its restoration and a successful fundraising campaign, the work was acquired by the Municipality of Pienza and returned to the Diocesan Museum (formerly with Frascione Gallery), restoring to the public a fundamental fragment of Italy’s historical and artistic heritage.
